Hortobágy

National park Hortobagy is the oldest and the largest national park in Hungary. It spreads on the area of 82 000 ha and it is a precious cultural heritage. Not only people but also animals had to adjust to the extreme conditions of the steppe. Apart from this steppe, there are many swamps, ponds, salt marshes and peat bogs. There are a lot of animals and birds, which we could see in the local animal shelter.

The centre of the park is the village Hortobagy. There is a guest house, which is 300 years old. We tasted the typical Hungarian meal - goulash. In the centre of the village there is a nine-arch stone bridge, shepherd´s museum of folk traditions and a fair with examples of local folk products.
